Frank Farmer’s early years remain somewhat obscure, but his life story becomes vivid through his own works—autobiographical paintings that trace a journey from hardship to artistic expression. Born in the mid-20th century in the UK, Farmer overcame a difficult childhood marked by institutional poverty and familial challenges. His formative years included time in a workhouse and a children’s home, experiences that would later become central to his art. Farmer embarked on an ambitious artistic endeavor: to paint his autobiography. He revisited pivotal locations from his past—such as the former workhouse where he was born (by then Minster Hospital)—and revisited them to capture them in paint with exacting detail.
